Quote:
Porcupine Tree are a progressive rock band formed by Steven Wilson in 1987 in
Hemel Hempstead, UK. Their music is difficult to categorize, being
associated with both psychedelic rock and progressive rock, yet having
been influenced by trance, krautrock and ambient due to Steven Wilson
and Richard Barbieri's penchant for the Kosmische Musik scene of the
early '70s, led by bands such as Tangerine Dream, Neu! and Can. Since
the early 2000s, their music has been leaning towards progressive metal.

The band are noted for their multimedia approach, with their live
performances including screens displaying a different film projection to
each song. This visual element was introduced during the tour for the
In Absentia album, when the band started to work with Danish
photographer and filmmaker Lasse Hoile. This involvement created a
distinctive image for the band.

Despite being signed to both Roadrunner and Atlantic labels, the band
has their own record label, Transmission, which they use to launch some
independent releases and special editions of their albums. Their 2007
album Fear of a Blank Planet was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best
Surround Sound Album.

The music of Porcupine Tree is often described as melancholic by many
people, even though it is not necessarily linked to Steven Wilson's
personality. He states music is a way for him to channel all his
negative feelings, and `an exorcism of those elements within`, finding
it "easier to write songs about the negative side of the world than it
is about the happy side of the world." In the Warszawa live radio
broadcast album, before performing "Stop Swimming", Wilson can be heard
saying "the saddest music is often the most beautiful."

Rock / Prog Rock / Art Rock / Experimental Rock

A 2-disc set. Disc one is a full show from the Deadwing tour filmed at Park West,
Chicago in Oct 2005, edited by Lasse Hoile, with the soundtrack mixed in
stereo and DTS 5.1 surround sound. Disc two includes bonus live
performances of Futile and Radioactive Toy from German TV show
Rockpalast, the Lazarus promo clip, the live films used during the show
for Start of Something Beautiful, Halo, and Mother and Child Divided,
Gavin Harrison's "Cymbal Song", and a photo gallery.

It's a pleasure to watch & listen to this concert & bonus stuff, each time I
play it. Considering it's PT's 1st official DVD release, I'm sure
they'll continue to put out some really good stuff on DVD in the near
future. This is only the start of something really good, although I wish
they hadn't become so widely known, compared to back in the '90s. There
is a lot of material missing from "Arriving Somewhere..." setlist, and I
don't understand why it was omitted (Shesmovedon, Deadwing, Radioactive
Toy). The question that comes up in my mind is: "Why release a DVD from
the "Deadwing" tour and not put the title track on?"

Sound quality is excellent, although they could've shown more of SW and
the band. Personally, I think they honed in on the audience too much,
and one of the cameramen went as far as zooming in pretty close on some
salt-pepper bear-ish guy in the front row. PT are a fantastic band, but
we need to see more of Steven Wilson & the band members...and not
some shy & out-of-place audience member. Finally, the guy appeared
rather uncomfortable, knowing he was in the spotlight on camera. Picture
quality wasn't too great at times, and there were lots of grainy shots
here & there. Also, I found it distracting when the picture would go
from grainy to clear (in color) to black & white and back to grainy
color & clear again (in color). I know this was done on purpose,
but come on, it was quite distracting. What i did like were the closeups
(not only of SW's face, but the band & instruments as well). Being a
huge fan of the mellotron & keyboard arrangements in music
(generally), I enjoyed seeing those zoomed in shots.
