Japanese edition of the 50Th Anniversary deluxe edition of Scorpions' seventh album. This remastered edition has six bonus tracks, outtakes and demos. One of them is Hey You, one of the singles of the album but only available in some editions of it, the singer in this song is Rudolf Schenker instead of Klaus Meine.
From Metal-Archives: The early 80’s were a crucial time for metal. Everything was going to change and evolve into something completely different from what had been made in the previous decade. A new era for the subgenre began, a new sound determined in a couple of records, specially (Priest’s “British Steel” would come slightly later): Motörhead’s “Overkill” and Scorpions’ “Lovedrive”. Both from 1979, previous to any really solid NWOBHM album (with the exception of Saxon and Quartz, who were still stuck in some 70’s classic rock cliches by that time). Those two had a big impact and influenced a whole generation, setting the rules, making clear that heavy metal should offer something straight and aggressive to prevail during that new decade that was about to start. Scorpions’ 7 studio record satisfied the requirements of those days ideally.
This one is quite unpredictable. Most people might have expected an absolutely similar work to its predecessor, after the crushing success it achieved. Surprise, surprise, this doesn’t sound like the previous LP at all. There’s a few similarities, though, like the loose tempos and omnipresent massive riffing. The frantic speed metal track “Don’t Make No Promises (Your Body Can’t Keep)” reaches the same brilliance of “Another Piece Of Meat”, with a much more evident melody and less brutality, for instance. But the rest of numbers feature something alternative and unusual from Scorpions’ own sound. The general pattern is totally determined to give riffs absolute control. Most of these compositions are based and constructed on Jabs & Schenker’s guitar lines. Everything else is hanging on them, including vocals themselves, as you can check on “Twentieth Century Man” and “Hold Me Tight”. Obviously, the riffs are modified during the tunes to introduce alternative structures and get some continuity. However, the variations are not particularly numerous. In conclusion, this music becomes completely direct, it goes straight forward, becoming truly heavy and insistent. Riffs, riffs, riffs is what this stuff is mostly about. And that’s no problem, the spectacular combo provide them of unremitting solidity and persistent consistency with no exception during the whole pack. The culmination arrives with the total catharsis of “The Zoo” and that supremely splendid terrifying huge riff, so damn weighty and powerful, hitting like a hammer. The title-track also achieves such an outstanding climax of intensity, with an exotic, kinda arabic, leading riff, supported by Meine’s tortured voice. Both unique moments in the history of the German metallers, along with the only ballad here, “Lady Starlight”. One of the most touching they ever recorded, with Klaus’ vocals incredibly sweet and emotional on an immaculately arranged love song, that includes an orchestra in the background giving it an unforgettable climax. Simply priceless.
What a great album, surprisingly different, remarkably inspired. It’s clear Scorpions didn’t want to repeat the same thing they did before, and the result proved that choice right. The riffs were always extraordinary on previous releases, but in this record they accomplish another level. Their presence, weight and texture have improved notably, becoming the true leading force of these guys music. They will definitely take all your attention and admiration, because the way Matthias & Rudolf define, develop and execute them is undoubtedly brilliant. The modifications of guitar lines in the songs might be humble, but versatile, creative and appropiated, revealing efficient structures that make sense. The song-writing process was also successful and competent, now with Jabs and specially drummer Herman Rarebell taking part on it. The result were compositions plenty of passion, energy and inventiveness, featuring a good balance of sophistication and violence. Some put emphasis on melody and harmonies, like the classic hit “Make It Real”; however, the wild riffing in general is what takes control here. I must highlight those riffs again, which sound more similar to what NWOBHM groups would do shortly afterwards, than what 70’s hard rock dinosaurs had been doing the previous 5 years. So unfair Meine and co. never get the recognition they deserve for leading the movement of change and development of 80’s heavy metal. On other hand, this material had certain influence. Just tell me how many times have you heard the “Falling In Love” intro. One of the most copied and imitated ever, ripped-off by thousands later, demonstrating this stuff certainly had some effect on musicians from several music genres. Though still a terribly underrated masterpiece, the most ignored of Scorpions glorious 80’s period, along with the satisfactory “Savage Amusement”. Sad it is sometimes forgotten on many of the enormous pile of compilations of the band, which usually include the opening cut only.
One of the most awesome records Scorpions ever did, in the same level of their most popular famous releases. As advanced and refreshing for those times as its predecessor, as heavy and fierce as its successor, just a bit quieter. Here you will find some of the most killer riffs the combo Jabs-Schenker ever created and played. Also, their most underrated ballad ever, probably the deepest and most sentimental from their whole career. Don’t hesitate to check this out, you will might get a big surprise. The exceptional cover artwork by Hipgnosis’ Mr. Thorgerson makes this LP even more seductive and provocative, not as explicit and scandalous as the previous album, but still has some subliminal sexual message I think...or maybe not that subtle.
