From RateYourMusic: So Resurrection was Rob playing it safe, really. It was an ok album with some great moments interwoven with a lot of nostalgia. But after the initial excitement of the Metal God's return wore off, it was clear for me, that this album leaves a lot to be desired. Some sense of adventurousness? Something a bit further stylistically from his Priest past? Crucible gave me all that. I remember being so thrilled by this album when I first heard it! It gave me so much more than Resurrection and that added to the effect. It was heavier, it was meaner, it was grittier, and most of all, the songwriting was a bit more complex. There seems to be more depth to these songs, both sonically and lyrically. There's really not a single stinker here. There are some weaker songs, but the average quality is top-notch. Take the title song, for instance. It's probably the best one Halford ever released as a solo artist. It's unbelievably bleak and heavy, and I've yet to hear a better chorus. It's going to haunt me forever. Then comes One Will, which is a short, in-your-face, catchy number that will have you singing along. It would not sound out of place on a Priest album. Betrayal is a fast, kick-ass shredder with Rob wailing like crazy, so is Handing Out Bullets, which is even more brutal. Hearts of Darkness and (even more so) Crystal seem a needed moment to catch a breath before another onslaught. Heretic is ok, but it's not one of my favorite numers here. Golgotha is another case. It sounds really epic (despite its length which does not qualify it as one), starts as a slow, heavy beast, only to speed up toward the middle of it. Wrath of God reminds me of Slayer in a way. Weaving Sorrow is a heavy, mean number with some badass vocals and chorus that hits you like a hammer. Repeatedly. Sun has an interesting, Tool-like sound and is another lighter moment on here. The last song, Trail of Tears is the least favorite of all and I usually press STOP after the previous one ends. As usual, Rob delivers some great vocals, but that could be expected. His voice matured really well. And I'm not saying he sounds old. He sounds as good as ever, his mids are really strong, highs still ear-piercing and overall it's a stellar performance. The rest of the guys did very well, too. They sound more confident and (yeah) adventurous than on the debut. Someone mentioned the production being (supposedly) bad. Well, it's not as crisp as Resurrection. There's some dirt to the sound. One might like it (like myself), others, who like their albums crystal clear, will complain. For me, the production is not a big issue here. I just dig the songs. So do yourself a favor and buy what is arguably the man's best solo offering. It's going to be hard for the upcoming album to outshine this one. I keep my fingers crossed.
