AC/DC... the mere mention of the name evokes ass kickin' rock 'n' roll. Nothing trendy or heady, just straight-to-the-gut, riff roaring rock. And the world is a better place because of the thundering gang from way down under.
AC/DC's electrified Powerage, originally released in 1978, when KISS was back-sliding, Aerosmith was rode-worn and coked-out, and tenacious Ted "Kill It 'n' Grill It" Nugent was too busy bow huntin', was just what ol' Doc Rock ordered. The bad boy boogie brigade delivered a storming set of nine hard chargin', straight-up cookin' cuts on Powerage, that were badly needed by the time the '70s was comin' to a close. Raunch 'n' roll had taken a major hit when disco and punk took center stage in the mid-'70s. The feral AC/DC were headbangin' punks, who steamrolled behind bluesy rock 'n' wayward roll, accented by Bon Scott's gritty, street-level lyrics.
Reissued in 2003, Powerage is 37 minutes of remastered mayhem. The sound quality throughout this remixed disc is stellar. Powerage is a party soundtrack for the lost weekend kegger, as AC/DC pound out the goods. Raw rockin' and dirty, Powerage is jump-started by the steamy "Rock 'n' Roll Damnation", followed by the low slung cool of the eviction-notice-served "Down Payment Blues". The gritty "Gimme a Bullet" bites down hard and packs ringing chords, giving way to the rampaging "Riff Raff".
The raging Powerage peaks with the bass thumping "Sin City". The Vegas inspired number is full blown sleaze 'n' roll from Bon 'n' the boys. "Sin City" rumbles with a slow burning groove, while Bon accents the trashy track with his snarlin', scotch-laced pipes. The song sounds like sin! AC/DC bring it home proudly with the mid-paced "Gone Shootin'", the rippin' "Up to My Neck in You", and the smash-mouth, chaotic closer, "Kicked in the Teeth".
The amped-up Powerage, which introduced bassist Cliff Williams to the masses, is a vastly underrated album from AC/DC's entire catalog of recordings. Depending on my mood, Powerage strikes as my all-time fav album from the greasy group of unpretentious dirty rollers. The hard-wired disc features scorching tracks from start to close, that are lean 'n' mean, yet hard 'n' heavy! There is no filler here. It's simply an onslaught of big meaty riffs, stinging leads, and Bon's bad boy boogie lyrics.
Packed and stacked, Powerage defines rock 'n' roll. It's no frills, kick ass rockin' thrills! Break out the booze and crank up the volume... play it loud for Bon.
