Octavo álbum de estudio de esta banda de Rock Progresivo con influencias de todo tipo incluído el Metal. Rozando el nivel de su anterior disco, In Absentia, pero sin llegar a las cotas de aquél. Sigue siendo un disco destacable, con algunos temas sobresalientes.
En esta edición japonesa en presentación mini-lp encontramos el álbum original en estéreo en HQ-CD más un DVD-Audio. En el CD hay una mezcla del álbum en estéreo con la lista de temas original y un tema extra respecto a la edición europea del álbum: Shesmovedon.
En el DVD-Audio viene el disco remezclado a sonido envolvente multicanal, una mezcla en estéreo de alta calidad junto con tres temas extras ("Revenant," "Mother and Child Divided" y "Half-Light") más otro escondido como "easter egg", fotos, vídeos y las letras de los temas. A pesar de poder disfrutarse en cualquier DVD casero, lo recomendable es disponer de un equipo que reproduzca la parte de DVD-Audio con el 5.1 en alta calidad, o un software de PC compatible con este formato.

Japanese mini-lp edition of Porcupine Tree 8th studio album.
Along with the Cd, in HQ-CD format and a bonus track, comes a DVD-Audio with a stereo mix as well as a 5.1 surround mix, both in high resolution audio 24 bit. The DVD has a lot of bonus like lyrics, pictures, videos and four bonus tracks (one of them hidden as "easter egg"). It's 100% playable in any DVD player but it is highly recommended to use a DVD-Audio player for enjoying the high resolution mix or a compatible software and sound card.
From RateYourMusic: By the time that Deadwing appeared, Porcupine Tree was already one of the better known names in contemporary progressive rock. Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun had introduced what was arguably the era's most effective synthesis of progressive songwriting with "trendy" aspects of Radiohead-esque alternative rock, whereas the more recent In Absentia successfully melded that style with aspects of prog metal to produce what is typically regarded as the finest record of their career. Deadwing completes the band's gradual transition from meandering space rock to heavier melodic prog, and does so without sacrificing the consistently excellent quality of the band's last three records. This is undoubtedly the most prog metal-influenced release of Porcupine Tree's career. Not only do chugging metal riffs work their way into the instrumental breaks, but there seems to be a concerted effort to deliver "edgier" vocal melodies on a number of tracks. Accompanying this darker sound is a purported concept involving some sort of tragic death and subsequent haunting (Steve Wilson initially intended there to be an accompanying feature film): this is evident in some of the lyrics, but in no way effects the overall structure of the album. I appreciate most of the album's heavier guitars as well as the gothic subject matter, seeing as the increased dynamics help Deadwing avoid the drifting monotony of many earlier efforts, but I could completely do without the metal-influenced "talk/singing" and persistent vocal distortion that crops up on a handful of tracks. Those moments sound horribly forced, a la an aging rock star who's trying way too hard to make his music relevant to a younger generation of listeners. In fact, I was so averse to the edgier vocal touches that I originally dismissed this album as one of my least favorite Porcupine Tree records for several years. I've still never warmed to the title track, which is where these vocal stylings are most intrusive (alongside "Open Car"), but when I finally allowed myself to look past that selection I discovered yet another fantastic entry in the Porcupine Tree discography. It still falls a bit short of In Absentia, but it's just as essential to any modern progressive rock collection as In Absentia or Lightbulb Sun.
As with In Absentia, Deadwing features a nice mix of punchier rockers with slower-developing atmospheric prog cuts. Where Deadwing differs is that there are far more heavy rockers, which makes more room for the prog metal touches mentioned above. Among these consistently heavy selections, I'm most impressed with "Halo", which features a fantastically bouncy bass line that recalls the similarly memorable beat off "Slave Called Sliver" (Stupid Dream). Lead single "Shallow" is also good fun, but comes off as a bit generic. That leaves "Deadwing" and "Open Car" as my primary roadblocks toward granting the album more than an "excellent" 4.0 star rating. I suspect that both of these tracks have their fair number of supporters, but I can't shake my impression that they both sacrifice substance for style. Perhaps if I was a bigger fan of progressive metal I'd have better luck here… The primary irony surrounding Deadwing is that, despite being the band's heaviest release, it is carried by its least metal-influenced tracks. Maybe this is due to the contrast with the album's beefier selections, but I'm more prepared to credit the subtle incorporation of heavier aspects in the climactic moments of the proggier cuts. Whereas earlier Porcupine Tree albums were plagued but potential standouts that failed to deliver memorable climaxes, Deadwing is loaded with fantastic choruses and outros. Foremost among the record's slower-developing selections is career highlight "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here", which starts off in a drifting Stupid Dream-esque mode but supplies an enormous payoff over its heavier second half. I'm also especially fond of "The Start of Something Beautiful", which follows a similar blueprint. "Lazarus" is one more track that deserves specific mention, in this case as one of the band's better piano-led ballads (it's also the only track here that never gets remotely heavy). "Mellotron Scratch" and "Glass Arm Shattering" are well-performed "swirling" prog pieces, even if neither delivers the huge payoff that its relatively extended runtimes demands. The good news about Deadwing is that even these potential lowlights, including those two "overly heavy" tracks singled out above, are fairly good in the grander scheme of modern progressive rock. A strong 4.0 stars for a great album that I'll undoubtedly be listening to for years to come.
¡¡¡OJO!!! Nuevos enlaces para el DVD-Audio (ISO y MDS). El anterior ripeo no era correcto y daba fallos. He tenido que hacer una nueva copia usando DVD-Fab, montando la imagen con UltraISO, extraer los archivos y finalmente hacer una nueva imagen con IMGBurn. Ahora puedo confirmar que los nuevos enlaces son 100% fiables. Lo he probado tanto en el PC como grabando una copia en un doble capa y usándolo en mi reproductor de DVD-Audio.
No olvidéis descargar el archivo MDS si queréis quemar un doble capa, no el original que está incluido en el rar con los scans, y sustituir los nombres por DEAWING.ISO y DEADWiING.MDS.

Warning!!! New links provided for the DVD-Audio, the old rip is not correct and it doesn't work properly.
I made a new rip with DVD-Fab-->mounted the ISO file with UltraISO-->extracted the files and then made a new ISO+MDS file with ImgBurn.
After checking and testing it, I can confirm that the new link is totally playable (checked in Foobar and WinDVD) and I suppose you can burn it with any software you use. I used ImgBurn (selecting MDS-don't forget to change the file names to DEAWING.ISO and DEADWING.MDS- download the new MDS link and forget about the MDS file included in the rar file with the covers) for burning it and I've got a DVD-DL that works in my DVD-Audio player.

Lo cierto es que creo que da igual porque en ambos casos están sin comprimir. Aunque también depende del cable y el reproductor casero que tengas. Hay algunos reproductores de DVD que escalan en HD y consiguen muy buenos resultados, pero tendrías que tenerlo conectado a un televisor HD y con un cable HDMI o de vídeo por componentes. Las opciones son tantas que no creo que haya una respuesta simple, supongo que será cuestión de que hagas tú mismo la prueba a ver qué tal.
En el caso de estos DVDs el truco no está en la imagen, están en el sonido, con una calidad superior por frecuencia de muestreo y cantidad de canales al CD tradicional. Sólo algunos Blurays superan en sonido a los DVD-Audio. NO A LA LEY LASSALLE
