Japanese remastered editon in SHM-CD (Super High Material) of the third album from Rainbow recording live during Rising tour.
From RateYourMusic: In 1977 Rainbow had only released two studio albums but still they or at least Ritchie Blackmore decided to release a live album. They had recorded various concerts in Germany and Japan for a double LP. The decision to release a live album was legit, because Rainbow live and Rainbow in the studio were two different bands. Like Ritchie Blackmore’s previous band Deep Purple Rainbow was a very talented group with some of the most talented musicians around. Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, the drummer Cozy Powell, keyboarder Tony Carey, bassist Jimmy Bain and singer Ronnie James Dio were really on top of their game and the interaction between them was terrific. Like Deep Purple the band took a song from a studio album and transformed this song with jams and improvisations and soli into a long piece of music.
“On Stage” is really one of the best live albums of the seventies along with Deep Purple’s “Made in Japan” Judas Priest’s “Unleashed in the East”, Thin Lizzy’s “Live and Dangerous” and the Kiss Classic “Alive”. The only bad thing about the album is the set list. Rainbow just had released “Rising”, their second studio album, one of my all time favorite albums and none of the songs was released on this live record, even tough the epic “Stargazer” and “Do You Close Your Eyes” was regularly performed during this tour. But otherwise this album is great and is still a pleasure to listen. From the opening “Kill the King” to the final note of “Still I’m Sad” it is a great performance. The best song on the album, at least in my opinion is the Deep Purple classic “Mistreated”, which already was a good song, when David Coverdale sung it in Deep Purple but Ronnie James Dio’s voice made this song a classic. Other great songs are the calm “Catch the Rainbow” and “Man on the Silver Mountain”, but really every song on this live album is great.
“On Stage” really showcases the best Rainbow lineup during their prime. Too bad that Ritchie Blackmore treated his band mates like slaves, because this line up could have become one of the greatest hard rock band of all times.
