| Rotting Christ - Non Serviam - A 20 Year Apocryphal Story (2009)
Rotting Christ is a Greek extreme metal band formed in 1987. They are noted for being one of the first black metal bands within this region, as well as a premier act within the European underground metal scene. They are also responsible for creating the signature Greek black metal sound prevalent in the early 1990s.
During their rehearsal era in the late 1980s, the band began as grindcore and released various demos and splits with other bands from the Athens area. The group would later alter their sound with influence from proto-black metal bands like Celtic Frost and Venom, and in the process became one of the genre's instigators. Their 5-song demo, Satanas Tedeum, would show a grindcore/black metal crossover, followed by their career-breaking EP, Passage to Arcturo, in 1991.
One of band's first major appearances was on the 1993 "Fuck Christ Tour" consisting of Immortal and Blasphemy. During this concert, some audience members had engaged in cutting and self mutilation that resulted in hospitalization. Before signing to Unisound, Mayhem's Øystein Aarseth had expressed interest in distributing the band through his Deathlike Silence Productions label, but due to Aarseth's murder the same year, nothing materialized. The band would sign to Century Media in 1996 and remain on their roster for 10 years before joining Season of Mist.
Rotting Christ has played in many countries outside their native Greece, including both Americas, Greater Europe, Russia, the United Kingdom, Malta, Kelantan Darul Naim of Malaysia and the Middle East. Several heavy metal festivals around the world have hosted the band, including the 2003 Wacken Open Air in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Past tourmates have included My Dying Bride, Tristania, Tiamat, Vintersorg, Finntroll, Agathodaimon, Old Man's Child, Malevolent Creation, Anorexia Nervosa, Vader, Krisiun, Deicide, Behemoth, Melechesh and Nile, among many others.
Rotting Christ was one of the initial bands to be announced to perform the Barge to Hell festival, which is a metal-themed cruise organized by Ultimate Metal Cruises and take place aboard Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas. Barge to Hell set sail from Port of Miami on December 3, 2012.
As of 2012, Rotting Christ has been around 25 years and is one of the longest running bands within the black metal genre. In celebration of the band's longevity, the 2-DVD + 2-CD compilation Non Serviam: A 20 Year Apocryphal Story, shot in Athens on December 8, 2007, was released worldwide February 23, 2009.
Aealo, the band's tenth studio album, was released on February 15, 2010, for Europe and February 23, 2010, for the USA.
Their eleventh album, Kata ton Daimona Eaytoy, was released in March 2013.

Quote: This is one of the releases I was impatiently waiting for from the very first time I learned this DVD was going to hit the shelves in every record store. ROTTING CHRIST made some huge changes - and experimented a little - over the last few years that really helped them make one more step further in their career. After a magnificent full-length album (Theogonia), here comes the band's latest offering, Non Serviam: A 20 Year Apocryphal Story, A DVD that will probably please every fan of ROTTING CHRIST.
The Greek black metallers decided it was time for a change and they broke their contract with Century Media Records, something that was holding them back, and signed with the French extreme force Season Of Mist. After releasing an album that featured the brutality of their early years, the melody of their Triarchy Of The Lost Lovers and A Dead Poem era and incorporated new elements like the use of Greek traditional instruments, ROTTING CHRIST set off for a long tour that brought them in almost every corner of the planet. One of their stations was Athens, their hometown, and Gagarin club was more than happy to welcome them for an unforgettable show in front of 1500 people!
As you can easily imagine, watching a DVD with a live show you were in, sends shivers down your spine. So, let's get this from the start. It is Saturday, December 8, and hundreds of fans are waiting for the doors to open. Just minutes later, the venue is full, the passion is more than obvious and the intro prepares us for the total holocaust that was going to take place. Watching this DVD reminds me of that beautiful night, although I can say that the camera views are kind of tiring at some parts. But let's not be bitchy.
Pretty good video and audio quality that can give you a fine sample of that night's atmosphere. Now we get to the second DVD and here the things… well, they could be much better. What we have here is a documentary about ROTTING CHRIST, with the band's frontman Sakis telling the story of the band from its first days until now. Since this whole thing is in Greek, there are English subtitles for everyone to understand. What kind of sucks for the non Greek fans, is that the - pretty interesting and funny I must admit - backstage video footage from the tours the band made for its two last albums contain many parts were Greeks talk and someone who doesn't know Greek will not be so happy for not realizing what they are saying and why they are laughing for instance. Thumbs up for the bootleg videos filmed by fans over the years and contain live clips from the band that go back to 1993. The rare and precious bootlegs section is also really cool and kind of touching, since you will come across posters, flyers, t-shirts and other stuff concerning the band. Let's also not forget that the band's videography is contained in here with the three video clips being a nice viewing experience.
Regarding the two audio CD's, there is actually nothing to comment since they contain the soundtrack of the Athens show, as well as some extra tracks from a live show recorded in Larisa on February 3rd and 4th 2007. So, I said this is a pretty satisfying DVD with tons of videos and old school stuff, but it could be a lot better with the English subtitle thingie we were talking about, a kind of better video editing and… a more professional approach to the package. Just imagine a beautiful package that has 1-2 spelling mistakes in the tracklist. I am sorry but the song is not called Feast Of The Grany Whore.
