Angeles del Infierno - Discografia

Angeles del Infierno es un grupo de Heavy Metal fundado en España en 1978 por el Guitarrista Robert Álvarez y el Bajista Santi Rubio. La intrincada historia de Ángeles del Infierno se inicia en Lasarte, Guipúzcoa, localidad natal de la banda. Su aparición fulgurante en el (para aquel entonces) creciente panorama del Heavy metal ibérico supuso la constatación de que no solo en Madrid y Barcelona se podía hacer buena música dura.
Antes de grabar su primer disco, el grupo creado por Robert Álvarez y Santi Rubio trabajó intensamente para hacerse una reputación en el País Vasco. Tuvieron la gran ventaja de que aún no se había producido el estallido del rock radical vasco, pero Ángeles llevaba en la brecha desde finales de los años 70.
Robert había vivido 10 años en Suiza, donde había formado una banda llamada The Flood. Ya en el País Vasco, el guitarrista conocio a Santi, juntos maduraron la idea de formar un grupo y se pusieron manos a la obra en 1978 recuperando el nombre de The Flood hasta conseguir un repertorio y estilo propio, después de algunos cambios la formación fue la compuesta por Robert Álvarez (Guitarra solista), Santi Rubio (Bajo), Manu García (guitarra rítmica) y el Batería Iñaki Munita. Comenzaron a elaborar un repertorio de versiones de grandes figuras del rock, como Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin o Jimi Hendrix. Juan Gallardo se estableció como vocalista después de que pasaran por la banda un total de 14 cantantes entre 1979 y 1982, Gallardo sacaba entre seis y siete años de diferencia a sus compañeros, que apenas pasaban la veintena. A comienzos de 1982 la formación ya estaba cerrada y se decidio cambiar el nombre del grupo por el definitivo de Ángeles del Infierno.

Angeles del Infierno is one of the most well-known bands in the Spanish territory along with Mago de Oz and Baron Rojo. Their album debut, “Pacto con el Diablo”, is one of the best (if not the best) heavy metal album coming from Spain for several reasons.

First of all, we have the background story of the album which relates to the very first wave of Spanish heavy metal. Influenced by old hard rock artists, PCED is filled with traditional riffs and catchy vocals. Even though the sound presented in this album may sound too simplistic for some people, there is no doubt that in the time of the album's release, it had a deep impact because of its extreme innovations. What we have here is a well-produced album (despite the release date) that deals with all the stereotypical metal features. It has a good use of guitar distortion accompanied by creative and inspiring solos and a powerful mixture with the rest of the instruments. The drum patterns are a little bit simplistic and they sound practically alike in a few songs. The bass performance follows the drum patterns, so it doesn’t represent a major force in the overall album sound.

In another instance, as I said before, the Angeles sound is greatly influenced by old rock characteristics, therefore the vocals and guitar are the instruments that have the principal role in their compositions. Fortunately, Gallardo's vocals are powerful enough to blend perfectly with the heavy riffs. Some of the songs in this album have been considered classic heavy metal anthems for years because of their simple, but effective formula. For example, “Sombras en la Oscuridad” and “El principio del Fin” transform the already hard rock-ish Spanish sound to the very foundation of old heavy metal.

Finally, heaviness and speed are present in this album along with catchy solos and vocals as well, so there is no excuse to avoid an album that has been hidden in the shadows for its not so modern sound. In the end, Angeles is the very proof that underground Spanish music is now rising to take its place in heavy metal history.

Do you like twin guitars? Speed metal? Judas Priest, Saxon and Accept are in your top ten bands? Then you must not miss this album. Ángeles del Infierno are also known as “The Spanish Judas Priest”, and not without reason; every element in this band will remind you of them. The present album is their second release that came after the great debut Pacto con el Diablo, and before they went downhill.

With a high dose of speed and heavy metal, Diabolicca is full of sing-along, catchy tunes. Their sound is an interesting mixture of Halford like high-pitched vocals, Accept influenced leads and a guitar tone very close to Screaming for Vengeance, and fist-shaking riffs in the purest early Saxon vein. The percentages of each ingredient will vary from song to song, but these elements should give you an accurate idea of how the band sounds. To start with, we have an excellent 80s production where every member is perfectly audible, so the band sounds sharp and heavy. Then there’s the song writing, which follows the heavy metal commandments; blazing solos, powerful riffs, very catchy choruses and 3 types of song; mid-paced/up-tempo anthems, speed metal neckbreaking killers and melodic ballads.

Pretty much everything in this album is amazing and the listener will always be entertained, some specific proofs of this include (but are not limited to): the first tune “Fuera de la ley”, is a speed metal classic; it kicks off with a powerful drumming that Judas Priest should have started using in the 80s, a constant wonderful bass that will please all the Maiden fans out there, blazing guitars with leads that would have perfectly been in Restless & Wild and vocal lines that are as catchy as “Breaking the law” (Fueraaaaaa, fuera de la leeeeeeeeey!) and will hit really high notes that you even didn’t know existed. This, guys, is basically the Spanish version of “Fast as a shark”. Another kick ass song is the love ballad “Prisionero” (a personal favourite of mine); a very heartfelt singing by Juan Gallardo, – I used to sing this to my friends when we went out by night to embarrass them - and excellent leads once again, with catchy and beautiful melodies. A last mention for the title song, “Diabolicca”: a mid-paced anthem that reminds of the Denim and Leather years; very simple main riff with many breakdowns, and a chorus that will make you point to the ceiling as if you were singing “Wheels of steel”.

The only subpar song is “Dame amor”, a mid-paced song where neither the pre-chorus nor the chorus itself don’t work very well, and since these are repeated too many times, the song ends up being a bit annoying. The latter is a minor problem in the next song (“Junkie”) as well, but overall “Junkie” is infinitely catchier, more varied and works much better than “Dame amor”, so it can still be considered a good song.

Overall, if you like your metal catchy, fast and can you are able to stand extremely high-pitched vocals, you need to own this. If you like this you should check out their first release Pacto con el diablo, Accept’s Metal Heart and Judas Priest’s Screaming for vengeance.

Totalmente de acuerdo con esto. Ninguna banda en España se ha acercado tanto al estilo Priest como Los Ángeles, guitarras cruzadas, los agudos del mismo Juan... la forma de componer y de tocar en general.

Aunque no me llamaron mucho la atención al principio (yo era más de Barón Rojo), me enganché a ellos con Demasiado Joven Para Morir. Seguramente los dos anteriores sean mejores, pero yo al tercero le tengo especial cariño. Luego en el cuarto creo que bajaron un poco y les perdí la pista, pero me alegró mucho saber que se habían instalado en Méjico y tenían bastantes seguidores allí.
