Japanese edition of Anathema compilation from two EPs: Crestfallen and Pentecost III.
Rateyourmusic: Of the three Peacevillian death/doom bands, Anathema seemed the one least tied to the death metal roots from which the style was sired in part from. Sure, there's growled vocals and the sense of feral aggression left over from that genre - particularly on the Crestfallen songs, which predate their debut LP, Serenades - but all the same, it seemed like they were quick to move away from the death part of death/doom metal.
Pentecost III in particular shows this: outside of "Memento Mori", there ain't much death metal on that EP. Utilizing doom metal riffing with a distinctly grandiose sense of melody and vocals sliding from gothic baritone readings to shout-growls, Anathema built long, winding epics that seemed to merge a bitter, mournful atmosphere with a sense of elegance and grace. To be honest, when hearing the distinct main theme of "We, The Gods", or that mighty riff that comes into "Kingdom", after its long and toiling build up - I get something a lot closer to Candlemass than I do their peers. Along with their gainful of clean melodies as a contrast to these steely riffs, these songs are composed in an exceptional manner, with a sense of flow between individual song parts that was a cut above most of their peers. It's good shit, and by far the best Anathema effort - their full lengths during their gothic doom period are generally good, if a little inconsistent, and the Crestfallen EP this is packaged with, is decent but isn't as well written. That EP does have its strengths, particularly with its more potent sense of aggression derived from generally grimier riffs.
But Pentecost III is where its at with this bundle, and while it's long for an EP (35-ish minutes), it rarely wastes any of its time or momentum. Worth getting, for sure; Crestfallen makes for a nice bonus with it.
