The Cult tenth studio album where Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury are the only members remaining of the original line up. Produced by Bob Rock, he plays the bass guitar in some tracks.
From RateYourMusic:
The Cult use the opportunity with this new record to channel the grandiosity of their AOR influence into a harder, more riff-based style, and actually hold their own really well. Everything about this album bleeds confidence: Astbury's vocals sound about as good as in the mid-90's, which is astonishing, and the guitar riffs here are surprisingly well-crafted. "Heathens" comes to mind, with its ridiculously simple but catchy melodic riff that buzzes over the verse. And Ian gives a hell of a performance that gives the track a live show feel, as he ad-libs passionately toward the end as the lead guitar bangs out a quite fitting solo to play the track out. I also really like "Birds of Paradise", in which we find some great lyricism about how the band have noticed a generation shift that has occurred in the last couple of years, which I actually really agree with, and the vocal progression on the chorus is one that will stick with you for the week to come. And what I really liked about Hidden City is that it delivered all the nostalgic Rock N' Roll! charisma of the 80's, without sacrificing energy from clean recording or strict form. It's as if The Cult went in that studio in their 80's leather and just had fun, and this is what came out. It's a great listen for a fan of their earlier work and one that could even be argued as a decent introduction to the band despite having a different sound than the projects that made them so famous like the fantastic Love.
Of course, I had some issues with this project. "G O A T" is as stale as they come, and with an equally boring guitar riff to boot. "Dance The Night" is their failed attempt at a radio rock dance number that lacks any of the rhythm to make it so. And "Hinterland" is nothing special, and gets a little indulgent in it's own "epicness" to where it just comes off as cringeworthy, which can definitely happen for a lot of this project if you perceive it the wrong way. Overall though, solid project, I'm fucking floored by how full Astbury's vocal is, and uh yeah, give this thing a listen..
