Japanese edition this double compilation with a couple of unreleased tracks when it was firstly published.
From RateYourMusic: Deadly Sting: The Mercury Years is a comprehsive two-CD set that garners a four-star rating overall. Disc one shines from start to close, with kick ass tracks from Lovedrive,Animal Magnetism and Blackout banging down the doors... it warrants five stars. In stark contrast, disc two lacks fire power and earns three stars at best. The mere inclusion of the ultra-awful, over-played, whistling ballad, "Wind Of Change", hurts disc two in a major way.
The Scorp's peaked with the triology of Lovedrive, _Animal Magnestism and Blackout, from the late '80s and into the early '90s. Like Judas Priest, the Scorpions slipped as the '80s advanced. The trio of albums is the staring point for the Teutonic rockers...
Lovedrive (1979):
The Scorpions backed it down slightly, after the go-for-the-throat sound on Taken By Force (1977). With the release of Lovedrive, the production is layered with thick, accessible rock 'n' roll tracks that define American FM radio. Just check out the warm flow of "Loving You Sunday Morning" for a prime example.
The tracks from Lovedrive were recorded for a hot summer night, with the stars shining brightly, as your foot is plastered to the floor of a hot Camero. Teutonic riffs roaring from the speakers of a rev-d up American pony car with rubber burnin' muscle.
The eight song Lovedrive LP is a classic pre-NWoBHM recording that helped usher in the big metal movement of the early 80s. The title track just rips from the off, as does the hammering "Another Piece of Meat", and "Can't Get Enough". "Coast To Coast" is an awesome cruising instrumental that features the Schenker brothers on guitar. The pace slows with "Always Somewhere", "Is There Anybody There" and the epic album closer "Holiday". Lovedrive is a semi-commercial opus that finally pushed the Scorpions firmly into the U.S. buying market. The German rockers moved major numbers over the course of the next decade, after paying their rock 'n' roll dues.
Animal Magnetism (1980):
Hitting the eighties hard, the Scopions' built on the strength of the stealth Lovedrive album as the German group prepared the tracks for the Animal Magnetism LP. Originally issued in 1980, the Dieter Dierks produced recording features eight heavy tracks and one Bic-flickin' ballad ("Lady Starlight"). The entire disc delivers the goods, as Animal Magnetism is pure arena rockin' mayhem from the animated Kraut rockers.
Opening strong with the immediate "Make It Real", Animal Magnetism is driven behind the twin guitar work of Mathias Jabs and Rudolph Schenker, while spastic front man Klaus Meine accents the metallic onslaught with his powerful pipes. Packing heat behind the low-life-in-the-big-city "The Zoo", which is five-minutes of chuggin' action, plus the mid-paced "Hold Me Tight", the frantic "Don't Make No Promises (Your Body Can't Keep)", and the dark title track, the payin'-their-dues Scorps were on their way to finally conquering the North American market as the early eighties progressed.
Blackout (1982):
Germany's hard rockin' Scorpions kicked uber-ass throughout Blackout. The heavy hittin' Blackout completes a hot run of recordings from the second phase of the Scorp's long and checkered career, that includes the Lovedrive andAnimal Magnetism albums. Behind the ball bustin' title track, which leads off this raging album, as well as the frantic "Dynamite", plus "China White", "When the Smoke Is Going Down", "You Give Me All I Need", and "No One Like You", Blackout is a prime time hard rock recording. Blackout broke the group big-time in the states, as Klaus 'n' his krew rode high during a massive American summer tour in '82. Unfortunately, following the Blackout blitz, the Scorpions began their downward slide.
