Japanese Deluxe edition Katatonia's new album. This edition includes two bonus tracks and a DVD with the album remixed in 5.1 and an audio track in HQ stereo.
From RateYourMusic: Katatonia are constantly bashed for lost creativity, loss of quality and rehashing previous material. None of which hold true in my opinion - the band has certainly kept to a certain sound since Last Fair Deal Gone Down and somewhat even before that, but they have consistently evolved and honed that style. Their latest full-length album Dead End Kings got quite a bit of flak for various things, but I liked it in the end. It's probably their weakest since Last Fair Deal, but it's still a fine album filled to the brim with great songs and a grower for sure. It does have a jam-packed sound which sometimes works against itself and there is perhaps a bit too much going on. Being multilayered is fine, but Dead End Kings was too layered - all sorts of instruments and programming delivering various melodies on top of each other was at times a bit exhausting.
If The Fall of Hearts does something right, it's definitely to correct that very mistake; the production breathes much more effortlessly. However, this doesn't mean that The Fall of Hearts is a simpler Katatonia album. On the contrary, it's probably the most varied they have been in their career. The term progressive has been thrown around Katatonia at least since The Great Cold Distance, perhaps even earlier, but I think The Fall of Hearts is the first real example of a more progressively oriented sound. Anders's clean guitar leads are magnificently ornate and meandering and Jonas is still at the top of his game, where he has comfortably been at least since Night Is the New Day.
The album starts off with an amazing four song streak. Each song is very different, yet a sense of melancholia and longing lingers in them all. If the rest of the album was this strong, it would easily top Night is the New Day as my favourite, but alas, it is not so. The album evens out after the breathtaking start, and comes up for air at times in short bursts of brilliance. Zero weak songs and at least six of the twelve pieces are considerable highlights. What an album! I really didn't believe in Katatonia this much. The album is long though, bordering on too long. At 67 minutes, it's prominently longer than anything the band has done earlier (54 was the longest earlier). Still, the song material is strong enough to carry through the length.
I must nitpick a bit about a certain choice of instruments before I conclude. Dead End Kings created a legacy that took new forms in an acoustic reworking Dethroned & Uncrowned and later on that acoustic album brought forth a live tour and a subsequent live album. Sanctitude is great, yet there's a grinding flaw: bongo drums. They aren't overused or anything, but their sound is still very prominent, and it somehow feels like a cheap choice for percussion. As is to be expected of this rant, the damn bongos make a return on The Fall of Hearts, and in a handful of tracks at that, Serac and Residual to name a few.
