Japanese edition of Deep Purple fifth studio album. Between In Rock and Machine Head is not as good as them, however it contains great tracks and some classic live songs of the band like The Mule or Strange Kind Of Woman.
From RateYourMusic: In Rock, the last Deep Purple album just before this on eand the first classic from the MarkII line up helped put Deep Purple on the map and it is still a classic today. Machine Head, the album largely held as the greatest Deep Purple ever released was just after this, and is so beyond over rated that it isnt even funny anymore. Sandwiched between those two is this, the classic Fireball. And album I truly consider the greatest album of the MarkII line ups era as hard rock Gods, and truthfully the all time best Purple album ever. Fireball blows Machine Head out of the water as soon as the heater starts the album off.
Most fans of the band dont realize the importance of Fireball in the linage of Deep Purples albums and history. It was Fireball that was really the bands first hint of success. It was here that youngsters line Yngwie Malmsteen and Phil Collin of Deep Purple became inspired to pick up the guitar. Among many other later british six-slinglers. Thats because one the whole this was the most consistant and greteast playing the great Richie Blackmoore would every squeeze out of his cream white Fender Stratocaster.
The title track opens the album wonderfully and forcefully. One cent help but take notice to the killer guitar riff, walk in the church organ and scream from another galaxy. The intensity is kept up through out the whole album. 'No, No, No' is an often forgot classic but truly among the bands all time best. And how about 'Demons Eye' a song that could make a run for the best Purple song ever. Its easily the strongest here an dId take it over 'Highway Star' or 'Smoke On The Water' from Machine Head anyday. While 'Anyones Daughter' is pretty out of place here it does work is a great closer to side one, and taken for what it is on its own, it is a pretty good song.
Side two doesnt live up to the power or overall classic level that side one is but thats not to say its weak by any means. 'The Mule' stars the second half of the album off with spacey voyage feel. Lots of ambience andspace between the instruments remind me of some kind of bad attempt at late 1960's psy. However, it must be said that the guitar solo found on 'The Mule' is among the absolute best guitar solos Blackmoore would ever create. And while it takes a little while for 'Fools' to start once it does its a total face melter. Undoubtably on eof the very best hard rock songs of the entire decade of the 1970's. 'Fools' really does kick so much ass. A personal favorite of mine. That violin break is so welcome, it really makes the second half of the song kick so much more ass. And how about 'No One Came?' What a powerhouse. I can imagine how great it would have been to hear performed live all those years ago. The guitar and organ solos are tops, a totally perfect way to end Fireball.
At the end of the spin Fireball still stands as Deep Purples strongest, most consistant, and most importantly, all around best album.
