PORCUPINE TREE - Fear Of A Blank Planet Japan MiniLP Edition (IEZP-58)

Japanese mini-lp edition of Porcupine Tree 9th studio album. This could be maybe their more eclectic album, moving from electronic music to extreme metal in some passages. The band counted with some remarkable collaborations for the recording of the album like Robert Fripp (King Crimson) or Alex Lifeson (Rush).
Along with the Cd, in HQ-CD format and a bonus track, comes a DVD-Audio with a stereo mix as well as a 5.1 surround mix, both in high resolution audio 24 bit. The DVD has a lot of bonus like lyrics, pictures, videos and the complete Nil Recurring EP as bonus tracks. It's 100% playable in any DVD player but it is highly recommended to use a DVD-Audio player for enjoying the high resolution mix or a compatible software and sound card.
From RateYourMusic: To me it seems like when an album gets a lot of praise, all toughs that believe they are “connoisseurs” of more fine and sophisticated music will go out of their way to find every little thing that’s wrong with it so they can shove it in the face of toughs who love it. I see this album get a lot of that kind of shit. Of course more than anything, I see people get on to Wilson about his lyrics and concepts. The thing is that this is my favorite album of all time, and yes, the porcupine tree fanboy in me is very annoyed by all the people who take shots at it. However, if I manage to get over that, and look at the whole thing for what it truly is, I still find to be an excellent album.
The first thing I want to address are the lyrics, because even many of the people who actually do love the album still hate the lyrics. Here’s the thing, I know Wilson is no Shakespeare, but if you look beneath the surface of what he is trying to say, you may find very deep emotion and vivid imagery. Now before you think I’m full of shit, get over it, and try to remember that art is all in the eye of the beholder. It’s very much that cliché idea that some people see a lot in abstract art, and others see nothing but shapes and lines. I find the lyrics to be very thought provoking and they fill my head with very dark pictures of media possessed teenagers wreaking havoc on society. Really it’s just my opinion, but I don’t have any problem with them, and actually like them a lot. Lyrics don’t always have to be super poetic and super deep to be good, so say what you want.
Moving on to what’s really important, the music itself. Let me start with the production. Many people also get onto this album about how its “over produced”. You have to remember that production is really nothing more than a preference and it doesn’t exactly make for a bad album, and it surly doesn’t mask good song writing if it’s there, unless the sound quality is just absolutely terrible to the point where it really does just get in the way. I do really appreciate lo-fi, but to me, the music is so good that it hardly even matters. And to some extent, ide say that the lush production does the well written songs justice. It manages to be very produced without coming off as “over the top”. One thing I really love about the music is that it all manages to be quite simple, yet still very good and attention grabbing, and somhow as it comes together, can be a complex peice as a whole. Wilson really knows how to write a killer guitar riff that’s just as simple as can be, and writing very nice and memorable melodies. Another thing that really sets the mood for these songs are the soundscapes. Not that soundscapes are anything new, but they do it in a way that’s just very porcupine tree and it makes the music stand out. And we can’t forget Gavin’s drumming. Ide like to meet the person who says Gavin’s drumming is not fucking AWESOME. Some of the things he does on this record blow my mind, and I think his drumming complements all the music very well. I really just can’t say anything bad about the music.
I give all 6 tracks 5/5. I guess I can’t really fully explain why I love this album so much, you either ganna love it or not. It all comes down to the amount of pleasure the music exerts from me, and nothing has ever been a more pleasurable listen. I know many people find the album to be a bit pretentious, but even though Steven Wilson can sometimes seem to have an ego, ide think you were daft to say the music on this album is anything but sincere. It wasn’t written to impress anybody, it was written to be dam good music as it is. And for all the people who call them pink Floyd knockoffs, come on, seriously? You know how many prog bands you could call Floyd knockoffs if you are to say the same for them? Maybe that could be more easily said about their early work, but this is something entirely different, I don’t feel ive ever heard anyone with a similar personality to porcupine tree.
