PORCUPINE TREE - Stupid Dream Japan MiniLP Edition (IEZP-54)

Japanese mini-lp edition of Porcupine Tree 5th studio album.
Along with the Cd, in HQ-CD format, comes a DVD-Audio with a high resolution stereo and 5.1 mix. The DVD has a lot of bonus like lyrics, pictures, videos and some bonus track. It's 100% playable in any DVD player but it is highly recommended to use a DVD-Audio player for enjoying the high resolution mix or a compatible software and sound card.
From RateYourMusic: If I could give this album 10 stars, I would.
Unlike many who've reviewed this album who've grown along with the band, I only recently discovered Porcupine Tree, going through their (quite extensive) back catalog for the past two months after falling in love with In Absentia and Deadwing.
I loved them all, and then I heard Stupid Dream, which has quickly become my favorite album ever, by anyone. Period.
The ambient sonics of the earlier works are still there, but not in the forefront as they'd been on earlier releases. Steve Wilson is a master of textures, and here, the drones and keyboard riffs are textures. The music is FAR more guitar-driven, and the vocals are also more prominent in the mix. While Wilson doesn't have the chops of a Stevie Ray Vaughn or a Steve Howe, he is more than competent, and his licks are tasty.
This album and Lightbulb Sun are often paired in that they are often considered the Tree's "pop" albums. Shorter songs that could have been very radio friendly, wonderful hooks and melodies. However, I think the reason that they're considered "poppy" rather than "progressive" is the comparison to what came before and after Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun. This is still VERY complex music; the albums before and after are just more OBVIOUSLY complex, Stupid Dream sounds effortless and shows a real maturing of Wilson as a songwriter.
Another reviewer said he thought the lyrics were "sloppy" and "less dark than Signify. I couldn't disagree more, on both counts. This collection of songs explores the pain of loss and the existential agony that sometimes comes merely from being alive. Though the lyrics are carefully chosen to avoid being sappy or too obvious, if one digs a bit you begin to wonder how he lived through this period of his life. Wilson doesn't pull any punches, he's a raw exposed nerve on this record. However, because it is so tasteful, the material never becomes maudlin or sentimental; rather it shows the beauty of the human spirit even in the face of pain and loss. Despite the thematic content, it is not a "down" record.
The opener, "Even Less," alone is worth the price of admission. This is a prog epic in pop music closing. Originally a 15 minute searing indictment of Christianity (the full-length version can be heard on Recordings), the latter half of the song has been dropped, leaving us a musically gorgeous, soaring song about going on living after one realizes that nothing can be changed, with suicides the casualties of man's war within himself. Hauntingly beautiful.
There's not a bad song on the album, but other standouts are "Don't Hate Me," "A Smart Kid," "This is No Rehearsal," and the wonderful instrumental "Tinto Brass," inspired by an Italian soft-core porn director.
