Double live album recorded during the tour of V: The New Mythology Suite, so the first CD is almost entirely dedicated to that studio album, while the second one includes older songs of the band.

I was slightly apprehensive when I first heard that Symphony X was releasing a live CD considering the complex nature of the band's music. Either the resulting CD would contain tremendous amount of overdubs or the music would lack the grandeur of its studio counterparts. Listening to this CD quickly disabused me of those suspicions. I can’t 100% say that this is free from overdubs but it doesn’t seem like it. The music comes across as a bit harder edged than their studio CDs up until the release of their last CD “The Odyssey”. My suspicions are that the touring they did for “V - The New Mythology Suite" was reflected in the harder edge that “The Odyssey” posses but I digress. The band still manages to evoke live the grandeur that their studio recording projects and overall the band's intricate music is executed almost flawlessly.
Michael Romeo is a tremendous guitar player mixing proficiency with passion. Proof of this is shown throughout the material on this CD. Michael Pinnella the Keyboard player is one of the best keyboardist around and adds texture, depth and grace to the music. The rhythm section of Lepond on bass and Rullo on drums are solid and do excellent work live. Rullo's drum in particular sound pleasingly sharper and crisper than in the studio CD's.
The band departs from the studio version of the songs on numerous occasions sometimes due to technical necessity of playing live and sometimes just for the fun of it. I quite enjoyed these departures since they showcased the bands creativity and mastery of their musical form. The band has very good chemistry playing off each other giving a dynamic and tight performance. Russell Allen's vocals sound rougher and grittier though no less pleasing than his vocals on Symphony X's studio CD's. His vocals radiate intensity and power.
As this was a tour to promote "V - The New Mythology Suite” that album is given prominence on the set list. Disc one is composed of 11 tracks and starts off with the first nine songs of "V - The New Mythology Suite" played in the order they appear on the studio CD. Song 9 of disc one, "Death of Balance" off "V" neatly segues into the fantastic "Candlelight Fantasia" from “Divine Wings of Tragedy" CD. The first CD is close's out with "The Eyes of Medusa" off the aforementioned "Divine Wings of Tragedy" CD. Disc 2 showcases Symphony X’s prior 2 CDs to “V” which are "Divine Wings of Tragedy" and the "Twilight In Olympus" CDs.
Highlights include "Evolution (The Grand Design)" which is played with an extra bit of aggression and certainly benefits from it. On disc 2 "The Church of the Machine" is a killer track with terrific vocals. Symphony X also perform a smoking version "Of Sins and Shadows" putting the studio version to shame and that's saying a lot. They also magnificently perform the complete version of “The Divine Wings of Tragedy” which is to my mind the best epic they have composed and would be worth the price of this CD alone.
If you are a progmetal fan than this release is indispensable to you, double so if you are a Symphony X fan.
