Japanese edition of Within Temptation's fourth studio album with three bonus tracks.
From RateYourMusic I should be harsh on my favorite bands because I expect so much out of them. While the rest of the Within Temptation discography generally met my expectations, this one exceeded. It seems hard to fault this album at all, for it's an exquisite blend of symphonic and rock that leans slightly towards the metal spectrum but doesn't quite go over. It's commercial enough to be easily enjoyed even by those who aren't into the 'heavier' music, yet not so mainstream that everyone's going to get sick of it being overplayed on the radio. As an attempt to sympathize with the metal purists, it's understandable for them to hate something like this, but I think that almost anyone could have a decent experience with most every track on this album.
"The Howling" is the perfect beginning. To me, that song is impeccable. Mysterious, but not overbearing. It has that gothic influence, but also the catchiness that makes me want to sing along with Sharon.
Another highlight is "Hand of Sorrow." The lyrics to that one are good, probably because they're based on a piece of literature. The musicality is also wonderful in that one, captivating introduction and powerful instrumentals. For once, Sharon's voice isn't taking over.
I'm not saying the whole thing is faultless. Within Temptation isn't very good at picking their tracks to end albums, not counting bonus songs. (Let's go back to Mother Earth with "In Perfect Harmony.") "Forgiven" is weak. The only redeeming quality is Sharon's voice. In making a good album, it's suggested to end with a strong anchor, which should be something like "The Truth Beneath the Rose," which epitomizes the album. Hell, if they wanted to end in a ballad, even "All I Need" is much better.
To summarize, I love this album. I overuse the word 'love' when it comes to music, but I'm genuinely in love with The Heart of Everything. I must have listened to each track over 50 times by now, unless I'm once again over-exaggerating. This is a very pointless paragraph, but I feel as though I must explain the reason why my rating might be so inflated.
