A live and acoustic record of this Gothic/Symphonic Metal band.
From RateYourMusic Ahh, Within Temptation, one of the great gothic metal bands - at least they used to be. Mind you, they didn't stop being great (in fact I consider The Heart of Everything, their latest offering, to be the best album by them), but they stopped being gothic metal. Gothic - sure. Metal - not so much. However, I love Sharon den Adel's voice, and I never had a problem with ballads by the band. So, despite my initial skepticism ("another live album? damn, get to work already!"), I thought more about it, and realized - an acoustic album is not such a bad idea, would add an extra layer of ownage to the ballads. Did this album succeed in doing that?
First of all, as I said, this is acoustic. There would be no point including the fastest and heaviest songs here, so there are almost only ballads, predictably mostly from The Silent Force and The Heart of Everything. Many fans could be turned off by this, but at least you know there's no point checking this album if you hate those. So, besides Sharon den Adel's amazing voice, we've got some guitars, pianos, violins - what you could expect from a classical acoustic live performance. Music-wise, it's pretty good for acoustic, and I'll say more - some songs are even better in this versions, namely some of the slowest ones ("All I Need").
If the album was merely a rehash in acoustic style of some of their latest successes, it would be far from enough. But that's not the case: from the epic new version of "Somewhere" with the addition of Anneke van Giersbergen's great voice to the mix, to the brand new studio song "Utopia" (which at first I hated, now I love - "so help us we're drowning...", there's enough here to justify the money to spend, but only if you're a fan, or completely new to the band and never heard these songs.
In the end, if you hate the band's latest albums, or don't want to spend a full album's price for a new song and reinterpretation of old ones, don't bother getting this - you won't enjoy it. If you liked Within Temptation's latest albums though, and you're even mildly interested on how would some of those tunes sound in acoustic style, I can wholeheartedly recommend this, as I enjoy this album pretty much. I'm still hoping they'll release a studio album too, but I don't mind listening to things like this in the meanwhile.
