Geddy Lee - My Favorite Headache Japan Edition (AMCY-7206)

Japanese edition of Geddy Lee's only album in solitaire (bass player and lead singer of Canadian Progressive Rock band RUSH).
From RateYourMusic:
The ugliest front man in rock's long established history goes solo. In the wake of Rush's recording hiatus, Geddy Lee departs shortly from Lifeson and Peart to record some solo material. Surprisingly, his solo material bears little resemblance to Rush besides containing his unique voice and intricate bass playing with this trademark Rickenbacker sound. Calling this progressive-rock really is a stretch by any means of the word. Intelligent hard rock would really be the best description.
Geddy, or the goose as I like to call him, chooses Ben Mink as his guitar player, doubling as the orchestral provider for the album. Multi-instrumentalist Ben Mink will be remembered by hardcore Rush fans for providing the violin on Rush's "Losing It" from theirSignals album. His guitar work fails to live up to Lifeson's standard, but at times resembles his with its textures and sound especially in the acoustic work. He's far from the degree of discipline that Lifeson is at so it comes as a bit of a disappointment after hearing him play with a master for thirty years. Bink's violin and viola contributions are strong and are what separate this release from Rush more than anything else. Lush strings add an interesting dimension to the music.
For some unknown reason, Lee chooses Matt Cameron as his drummer. Now why one of the most esteemed and experienced bass players in rock's history, with his choice of the best of the best drummers in the world, with Bill Bruford (one of Lee's most respected musicians) perfectly available, chooses Matt Cameron of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden fame to drum dumbfounds me. Even if you're the biggest Matt Cameron worshiper in the world, even if you're currently camped out on his lawn with a camera hoping to catch a glimpse of him as he opens to door to grab his morning paper, you must admit there's a rather large drop off from Peart to Cameron. With that said, he does an alright job here. He adapts to the songs well, and really plays much busier than he usual does, emulating in some regard's Peart's busy style. His playing is power and has alot of energy and does a good job of adding to the music instead of just keeping the beat. Still there are much better choices available for a man of Geddy Lee's fame. Cameron's performance remains good at best, and that doesn't cut it.
Lee always does a fantastic job. His playing here most resembles that which would be heard on Vapor Trails. My only complaint from him comes in his singing, which for the first time since 2112 sounds forced. At time he sings too close to the top of his register, and the results aren't pleasant.
All this said and nothing of the music. You would think that it being Lee's solo album that the bass would be the most pronounced instrument. You thought wrong big boy. The bass sounds more understated than it does in Rush with Lee's contribution coming mostly in the compositions which are all strong. Most of the songs are very heavy, as heavy as Rush's heaviest. The band plays as a good unit with not instrument really dominating the others. A few ballads appear which are better than a majority of Rush's, often having more depth due to the addition of violin. A few of the heavier tracks sound like a wall of distortion, guitar overdubs, and cymbal crashes. I'd like to blame this on the production, but these are just poorly written songs. Only a few of these on the album with the rest being more than enjoyable.
A must have in any diehard Rush fan's collection, not a buy for moderate fans as it won't give you what you expect and are looking for.
