| SERGEANT STEEL - Men On A Mission [bonus track] (2013)
Formed in North Austria in 2007 by singer Phil Vanderkill and guitarist Jack Power, SERGEANT STEEL released locally their debut three years ago. Since then the band toured central Europe, played in some festivals and secured a deal for their first international album, the just published "Men On A Mission". What attracted me in first place is the fact that the recording was mixed and mastered by legendary Michael Wagener (Alice Cooper, Skid Row, Extreme, Warrant, Dokken) at his WireWorld 2.0 studio in Nashville. And after listening the CD, I was pleasantly surprised.
Apart from the good musicianship and solid songwriting this sextet sounds quite mature for a novel band, blending their American influences with a distinct late '80s / early '90s European Melodic Hard Rock style. Opener "Gods Of Love" begins with some kind of a vaudeville instrumental intro until a rocking riff explodes giving place for an anthemic hard rocker, specially at the fist-in-the-air catchy chorus. Near the end of the song, the guys do a little tribute to classic Deep Purple with a nice Hammond / guitar interplay. But Sergeant Steel's overall delivery - as on most of the album, is based on a polished sound, hot guitars yet really clean, a pretty bombastic rhythm section and harmonised choruses.
Next track "Mom Horny" has some contagious heavy-funky overtones ala Extreme (both guitarists are really good) and Phil Vanderkill's register - which brings to mind Ted Poley and Jani Lane with a touch of Vince Neil - fits the song like a glove. This is super-moving track that would have been a sure-fire hit at MTV Headbanger's Ball back in a day. Great song! "Sweet 16" turn things much more simple, like a second hand Return (Norwegian band) yet effective anyway. One of my favorites is the midtempo "Don't Give Up", adorned with really nice keyboards and sweet harmony vocals. Germans Craaft is the main influence here. Talking about Teutonic legacy in style & sound, Sergeant Steel recalls on many places during this recording the underrated band Domain (especially the first Melodic Hard era of the this group) like on the solid rocker "Wannabe Outlaw" and title track "Man On A Mission".
One highlight for me is the AORish Melodic Rocker "Cry Out Your Heart, Baby!": lots of synths, oh-ohs backing vocals and sharp guitars in the best Fate (Danish band) style makes this one a real winner. More Americanized are "Some Girls Are Ladies", the slightly Ratt-esque "Taker Of My Heart" and "Born To Lose, Live To Win" (with a little Krokus throw in), while "Give Me A Call" is the only real ballad on the album adding acoustic guitars to the mix. Bonus "Black Wings Comin´" is the official anthem of the Black Wings Linz ice-hockey club (winner of the Austrian hockey championships in 2003 and 2012), a classic hard rocker played in the arena when the Black Wings enter the ice.
Sergeant Steel rocks really good in "Men On A Mission", where the melodies are catchy and truly enjoyable. You can hear Michael Wagener's magic hands throughout as he has done a great mix & mastering, but the basic tracks were previously produced by the band in Austria, and it's clear the guys know how obtain a crisp sound from their playing. As Gene Simmons once said: "you can't polish sh#t", so kudos to Sergeant Steel for the brilliant sound of the original tapes. Recommended suff.
