Tarja Turunen - Colours In the Dark (2013)

Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen Cabuli (born August 17, 1977), generally known as Tarja Turunen or simply
Tarja, is a Finnish singer-songwriter and composer. She is a light lyric
soprano and has a vocal range of three octaves.

Turunen studied singing at Sibelius Academy and Hochschule für Musik
Karlsruhe. She is well known as a professional classical lied singer but
best known as the former lead vocalist of the Finnish symphonic metal
band Nightwish, which she founded with Tuomas Holopainen and Emppu
Vuorinen in 1996. Their combination of hard and fast guitar riffs with
Turunen's dramatic, "operatic" lead vocals quickly achieved critical and
commercial popularity. Their symphonic metal style, soon dubbed "opera
metal", inspired many other metal bands and singers.

Turunen was dismissed from the band on October 21, 2005 for personal
reasons. She started her solo career in 2006 with the release of a
Christmas album called Henkäys Ikuisuudesta. In 2007, Turunen released
My Winter Storm, an album featuring various styles, including
alternative rock and symphonic metal and started the Storm World Tour.
Turunen released her third album, What Lies Beneath, in 2010. She
performed several concerts in Europe, playing in metal festivals
including the Graspop Metal Meeting and the Wacken Open Air, before
starting the What Lies Beneath World Tour, which lasted until April 8,
2012. Tarja's first live DVD Act I was filmed during this tour on March
30 and March 31, 2012 in Rosario, Argentina. Act I was released on
August 24, 2012. On the 6th of May it was announced that the 4th album
(to be released 30th August, 2013) will be named Colours In The Dark.
Tarja will start with the Colours In The Dark World Tour on October 17,
2013 to promote her new album.

featured on the album include some notable names – Doug Wimbish of

Kicking off proceedings with the excellent new single ‘Victim Of Ritual’
sets the standards high. This is a belter of a tune, although wait
until you hear ‘Never Enough’. The song features heavy guitar riffs and
singing from Tarja in her less operatic guise; a top class melodic metal
tune and then some. ‘Neverlight’ is another melodic metal beast and one
I could see being added to the live set.

‘Mystique Voyage’ recalls her Nightwish days with soaring operatic
vocals and string backing. ‘Lucid Dreamer’ is a strange song, featuring
plenty of special sound effects to create an almost ‘trippy’ listening
experience.

I also love the way Tarja weaves the West End musical style and
storytelling with metal bombast, best illustrated on ‘Darkness’. A
haunting song that stays on with the listener long after the last note
has been played… Then for some orchestral pomp look no further than
‘Deliverance’, another tune with a stage musical feel and loving the
strings/vocal arrangements on this song.

The best thing about Tarja’s albums is that there is enough of her
Nightwish past to keep those fans happy and draw in fans like me who
never really liked Nightwish much. Tarja’s musical adventure continues
taking along her many fans and hopefully gaining a few more new fans
along the way.
