Review from http://www.lordsofmetal.nl/

Happy birthday Dark Tranquillity! In 2009, the year that the godfathers of Gothenburg death celebrate their fourth lustrum, we, the fans, are treated for the third time. After the compilations ‘Manifesto Of Dark Tranquillity’ (best of) and ‘Yesterwolds’ (demos and rarities), we are now confronted with a double live DVD ‘Where Death Is Most Alive’.

The first disc contains the recordings of the concert that DT gave in October 2008 in Milan. In an absolutely packed Rolling Stone Club the likeable Swedish lads played a smashing career spanning set list of almost two hours. Since the tour was in support of the ‘Fiction’ album (2007), no less than seven tracks were played from that one. The remaining fourteen tracks are equally divided over the six preceding albums (indeed, debut album ‘Skydancer’ was skipped). Despite the experimentation of the ‘soft’ albums ‘Haven’ and ‘Projector’, all the material blends together very nicely into one set. Thanks to the well-chosen and varied sample from DT’s (almost) entire oeuvre, fans of every period are being served. Personally I enjoy the versions of ‘Edenspring’ and ‘Lethe’ the most. Another enjoyable extra is the guest performance by Theatre Of Tragedy’s Nell Sigland in ‘Insanity’s Crescendo’ and ‘The Mundane And The Magic’.

An aspect that should be mentioned as well is the sheer quality of the recordings. Eight high-def cameras viewing the stage from various angles gave the director the opportunity to put together a very enjoying and varied view of the stage activities. Moreover, the pictures are as sharp as you will probably ever see. Despite the number of cameras, the number of shots shown per second is far from disturbing. Tastefully switches are made from one band member to another to the overall stage view. Dark Tranquillity are at the to of their game and are moreover enjoying themselves visibly: Stanne maintains contact with the audience throughout the show (and jumps into the audience twice), making the warm and enthusiastic atmosphere even penetrate my cold unheated living room. The only downside in this respect is probably the fact that the show and the recordings are pretty bare bones: it would have been an even more entertaining viewing experience had, for instance, the pictures used on the screen behind the band, more integrally in the DVD.

If you still feel like more Dark Tranquillity after finishing DVD 1, you are in for a real treat on DVD 2. The second part of ‘Where Death Is Most Alive’ contains a documentary, seven promotional vids and the so-called ‘Live Archive’. This last bit should be very interesting, since it contains a hand-picked selection of old handycam footage that the band have dug up from their (private) collections. The archive showcases rare performances of songs that are seldom played any more and even some songs that have actually never been recorded (such as ‘The Dying Fragment Of An Elderly Dream’ en ‘Soulbreed’ from 1991). Unfortunately this part of the DVD is not featured on my promotional copy, so this is all that can be said about it.

Dark Tranquillity’s seven most recent videos (of their most recent singles) are all of course also traceable via Youtube, but a band of course cannot not include them when they release a DVD. The last part of the DVD concerns the documentary called ‘Out Of Nothing’, which is set in modern Billdal/Gothenburg and takes us on a trip down memory lane back to the early beginnings of Dark Tranquillty. The pictures and interviews are very down to earth, but to be honest, also a little simplistic and not that deep. Even though it is nice to get some more background info on the band, this part could have been so much more informative.

In any case, the quality and relevance of the first DVD is very high and despite the superficial documentary, I have no doubts that the Live Archive will make the second DVD very enjoyable as well. All in all ‘Where Death Is Most Alive’ easily beats their last DVD, the quick and easy ‘Live Damage’ (2002), on each and every aspect. ‘Where Death Is Most Alive’ has become a worthy conclusion to this festive year and moreover, it provides a solid transition towards the release of the new album, which is planned for February!
