As the man who put industrial music on the pop map, nine inch nails mastermind Trent
Reznor has few peers when it comes to conjuring the darkest sides and
sounds. Creatively restless, he progressed from his synth-damaged debut,
Pretty Hate Machine, through Broken, a metallic blast of anger, to his
varied and disturbing masterwork The Downward Spiral and the underrated,
finely detailed sprawl of The Fragile. Interestingly, NIN's
studio-crafted perfection has always blossomed fully in live
performance. But And All That Could Have Been proves beyond a doubt the
band's astounding live capabilities, its sweat-soaked energy coupling
with the work of renowned video artist Bill Viola, whose astonishing
experimental loops are projected onto multiple screens. Digitally
recorded during various stops on the "Fragility v2.0" tour, And All That
Could Have Been sports 18 songs from across NIN's body of work. Hits
like the anthemic "Head like a Hole" and the controversial "Closer" are
included, as are fan favorites such as "Wish" and "Hurt." The show is
lease-threatening, but as is always the case with Reznor the sonic blast
is a rich tapestry as opposed to a mindless din. DVD viewers can choose
from multiple camera angles and activate the thoughtful audio
commentary track, wherein Viola and others discuss the craft behind the
tour, which Rolling Stone magazine readers picked as 2000's best.
