HAMMERFALL- [DVD+2CD] Gates Of Dalhalla (2012)

The year is 1996 when a Swedish band prepares to revitalize traditional 80’s heavy metal – buried in oblivion at that time – with its debut album. And they were to succeed with flying colours! The combo answers to the name of HAMMERFALL and the record »Glory To The Brave« was to go down in metal history as the deliverance from the chains of grunge.

About 15 years, eight released studio albums and countless tours later, the men around founding member and guitarist Oscar Dronjak have firmly established themselves in the metal scene for a long time and are known for their energetic live shows all around the world. On the occasion of their well-deserved time-out in 2013, after which the quintet will return stronger than ever, a testimonial of HAMMERFALL’s on-stage power in a DVD+2CD format will be released before Christmas. For this, the extraordinary 135 minutes long anniversary show that took place on the 28th of July on the historic open-air stage Dalhalla near the small Swedish village Rдttvik was captured on camera. “We played a set of 25 songs, fired off reams of pyro effects and could welcome many great guest musicians“, Oscar comments. “We were on stage for 2 hours and 15 minutes and it actually turned out to be one of our best concerts ever. The stage itself was already a highlight, for it was partly glazed and water-flooded. Moreover, we had 80 Marshall amps lined up!“ Said squad of prominent guests involved HAMMERFALL founding member Jesper Strцmblad as well as ex-guitarist Stefan Elmgren among others, which made the show unforgettable not only for the 2500 fans in front of the stage, but also for the musicians themselves.

So you should be ready to re-experience this finest hour in HAMMERFALL’s history in front of the screens when the gates of Dalhalla open on the 30th of November. »Gates Of Dalhalla« is far more than just a live DVD: It’s the ultimate proof that the Swedes – despite the fact that traditional heavy metal got decent again in the 21st century, with newcomer bands springing up like mushrooms - still are the undisputed kings of their genre. On that note: Let the hammer fall!!!

The emule has been little active time, because people are used to the DD, but I deleted the files and a lot of work. E-mule is a bit slower but safer and also share with everyone. But if people keep files one time, the mule is faster than a horse biggrin

Hammerfall - Gates of Dalhalla (2012)

HammerFall is a Swedish heavy metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden. The band was formed in 1993 by
ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak. The band is considered to be
one of the founders for the second wave of Heavy Metal. As of 2012,
they are on a hiatus but will return with a new album in 2014.

Quote:
Formed in Göteborg, Sweden, in 1993 by guitarist Oscar Dronjak. Early line-ups
included members from In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, most notably
Jesper Strömblad, who continued to write songs together with Oscar and
singer Joacim Cans despite leaving before the first album was released.
Glory To The Brave (1997) and Legacy Of Kings (1998) cemented the band
as the pioneers of modern Eighties heavy metal. Often credited with
bringing back the melodies and honesty in music, the world-wide crusade
continued with Renegade (2000), an album that generated a breakthrough
for HammerFall and metal music in general in the mainstream media in
Sweden. The line-up was now complete with drummer Anders Johansson,
formerly of Rising Force fame, Stefan Elmgren on guitar and Magnus Rosén
on bass guitar. The latter two joined HF before the release of the
inaugural record, with Stefan even being a session player on Glory To
The Brave.

Crimson Thunder (2002) was next, followed by a live album and DVD – One
Crimson Night (2003) – recorded in their home town in front of a
capacity crowd. The fifth album, aptly titled Chapter V: Unbent,
Unbowed, Unbroken (2005) further planted the name HammerFall in the
minds of households in Sweden, as well as metal fans all over the world.
The band’s fourth world tour on as many albums was an even bigger
success than before, headlining the U.S. for the first time (after
supporting Death and Dio in 1998 and 2002 respectively). Threshold
(2007) continued that tradition, but the aftermath saw Stefan and Magnus
leave the band. Replacements Pontus Norgren (ex-the Poodles) and
Fredrik Larsson (ex-Evergrey) brought stability to the instrumental
section and No Sacrifice, No Victory (2009) was the first album recorded
with this line-up. Another tour of the world followed, this time
including India as well as the usual European and North American tours
and festivals.

The fall of 2010 was spent writing songs and recording them in the
band’s own studio, ⌘-s, located in Göteborg. The raw drum, guitar and
bass tracks were brought to Nashville, TN, where, under the supervision
of producer James Michael, the vocals were recorded. James also handled
the mix brilliantly, creating a heavy, traditional yet very contemporary
sounding album. Infected (2011) was released in May, and showed a new
side of the band, while at the same time leaving no old fans
unsatisfied. The single “One More Time” was complemented with a zombie
video, showing a modern and mature side of the band, though still
keeping the tongue-in-cheek atmosphere that has made HammerFall videos
famous. The legend has been reborn, indeed!

Tankcrimes over at ThrashHead wrote:

Quote:
In my opinion, most live releases fall into one of the two categories.
There are packages that attempt to convey the feeling of actually being
present at the artist's show, presenting blistering versions of familiar
songs and perhaps even bringing new life to tried-and-true tracks
through experimentation, alternate arrangements, or energy superseding
the studio versions. Iron Maiden's "Live After Death" and Judas Priest's
"Unleashed in the East" stand as two of the most celebrated live albums
of all time because of this synergy between powerful setlists, audience
participation, and inspired performances by band firing on all
cylinders.

And then, there are albums released to fill a void in the artist's
discography between proper releases, to document a particularly notable
event in the artist's history, to present an alternate version of
"best-of" package, or, worse yet, to fulfill contractual obligations.
While Hammerfall's "Gates of Dalhalla" aspires to greatness, its
polished nature works against it, sometimes making it sound more like a
greatest hits package and ultimately resulting in an enjoyable, but not
essential release.

From the beginnings of Hammerfall's rise to prominence in the late
1990s, the band has excelled at taking every cliché of power and
traditional metal and tweaking the result just enough to result in a
fresh, original sound. Fifteen years and eight full-length albums later,
the formula still works, as evidenced by the band's continued
popularity, and the song selection on "Gates of Dalhalla" is a testament
to the music's staying power. The show's setlist reads like a
collection of Hammerfall's greatest hits, representing all eight albums
with favorites such as "Heeding the Call", "Glory to the Brave", "Fury
of the Wild", and many others played alongside material from the band's
most recent album "Infected". If anything, the placement of songs proves
that the core style of Hammerfall did not change all that much since
1997, with the sole exception being the opener "Patient Zero" due to its
brooding, doom-infused bulk.

The band plays like consummate professionals, and the crystal-clear
sound makes most performances almost indistinguishable from studio
versions. Vocalist Joacim Cans is in fine form, effortlessly reaching
for the high notes and even leading a choir on rendition of classical
piece "O Fortuna". For this performance, the band was able to secure
guest appearances from several former members, including former In
Flames guitarist Jesper Stormblad, former Hammerfall guitarist Stefan
Elmgren, and vocalist Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity (who, as I
understand, was the original Hammerfall vocalist). Stanne's takeover of
lead vocal duty for "Steel Meets Steel" results in an interesting
version of a classic track, as his more aggressive (yet still mostly
sung) approach turns up the song's energy.

Unfortunately, herein lies the biggest problem of "Gates of Dalhalla".
There are not enough moments where the band completely lets loose and
adds something new to the songs, instead opting for faithfully
recreating the album. My version of "Gates of Dalhalla" is audio-only,
so this issue might be less prominent on a DVD/Blu-Ray release, but the
live album sounds so polished that it fails to convey the energy one
must have felt at that show. The audience participation parts are mixed
so low that crowd sing-alongs are almost inaudible in some parts, and
stage banter is kept to a minimum until fairly late in the show. As a
result, album does not convey the feeling of an interactive
presentation. Some songs actually fade in at the beginning or fade out
at the end, furthering the atmosphere of a greatest hits package.

As a best-of collection, "Gates of Dalhalla" is more than satisfactory.
It is a good starting point for anyone curious about Hammerfall, and is a
solid career retrospective and a historical memento for the band. As a
live album, it falls short of greatness, although it does have several
interesting moments and nods to the band's past. While not an essential
purchase, "Gates of Dalhalla" is a great alternative to a greatest hits
package, and an entertaining release in its own right.
