Sure The Velvet Underground may have inspired these guys and this sort of music,
but The Stooges arguably put out the first albums that could really be
considered “punk” and of those albums, Raw Power is the masterpiece. Its
title perfectly sums up its sound and its subject matter – it is raw,
powerful, immediate, and dangerous. It’s rebellious, sexual, gritty, and
frank. Songs like “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” “Your Pretty Face is Going to
Hell,” and “Search and Destroy” hit you over the head with their clamor;
with the intensity of suppressed violence and sexual aggression like a
train going off the rails. The music looks ahead to the sounds of the
Sex Pistols, Hüsker Dü, and Sonic Youth. On September 3, 2010, the
reformed Stooges performed at the All Tomorrow’s Parties festival in
Monticello, New York, with six fans chosen through an internet contest
getting the chance to film their show from the audience. The setlist was
the entire Raw Power album in a different order, but that new order was
somehow perfect, and at 63, so was Iggy Pop, even if his shirtless
torso wasn’t quite as tight as it used to be. From the roaring opening
of “Raw Power” to the crowd chanter “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” the band was
absolutely stunning; they whole set just percolated with electricity and
heat. Were these guys really in their 60s? Some of the youngsters these
days should take notes.
