Biografia

Rainbow fue un grupo británico de hard rock y heavy metal formado en 1975 por iniciativa de Ritchie Blackmore.

Ritchie Blackmore, guitarrista de Deep Purple, discrepaba de la orientación musical de esta banda y optó por separarse oficialmente en abril de 1975 para dedicarse a proyectos personales. Para ello convocó a los miembros de una banda ya existente, Elf.

Elf había sido soporte de Deep Purple Mk III durante algunas fechas de su última gira norteamericana. Con esta formación salió el primer álbum, titulado escuetamente Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow 1975, el cual ofreció como relativo éxito la canción Man on the Silver Mountain. Pero a continuación, Blackmore desarmó el grupo y se quedó solamente con el cantante, Ronald James Padavona, más conocido como Ronnie James Dio, con quien compartía gustos comunes por temas como la música clásica y el ocultismo. Esta situación los dejó en una extraña posición, con un disco grabado listo para salir pero sin una banda para presentarlo en vivo.

A la base Dio-Blackmore, que había demostrado tener una química indudable a la hora de sentarse a componer, se agregó un nuevo integrante: el baterista Cozy Powell. La incorporación del otro poderoso señor de los tarros de Jeff Beck resultaría vital para la obtención del sonido épico y demoledor que caracterizaría a la banda por los siguientes 5 años. Luego se integraría el bajista Jimmy Bain y el teclista Tony Carey.

Tras el alejamiento de Dio y el resto, Ritchie Blackmore se encontraba en una encrucijada tanto personal como artística viviendo un período convulsivo de cambios internos y externos. No resulta extraño entonces que decidiera buscar apoyo en alguien que conocía bien y que, además había ido progresando profesionalmente hasta convertirse en un prestigioso productor: Roger Glover. Si bien la partida del bajista de Deep Purple allá por 1973 había sido mucho menos que amistosa, casi seis largos años habían pasado desde entonces por lo que los ánimos volvían a estar predispuestos por ambas partes.

Casi por casualidad descubren a un tal Joe Lynn Turner, cantante y guitarrista rítmico de una modesta banda de la costa este llamada Fandango. Inmediatamente se decide reclutarlo, pues su voz es casi idéntica a la de Lou Gramm, cantante de Foreigner, grupo con el que Blackmore está obsesionado debido a su enorme éxito y a la casi perfecta receta de hard rock melódico con el que trabajan sus canciones.

Rainbow en 1995 para la placa Stranger in Us All y para una gira mundial. Para este, su último disco en estudio de hard rock, Blackmore reclutó a Doogie White, antiguo postulante para reemplazar a Bruce Dickinson en Iron Maiden, como vocalista, al bajista Greg Smith ( ex-Alice Cooper ), al tecladista Paul Morris ( ex-Warlock ) y el baterista John O'Reilly. Este último se rompe una costilla después de la finalización del disco, por lo que es reemplazado por el último baterista de la anterior formación, Chuck Burgui.
