Nowadays Alyson Avenue maybe are most famous for the group that Nightwish-singer Anette Olzon were a member of before joining the finnish giants, but Alyson Avenue are much more than just that. They started out already in 1989 but didn’t get their big break until years later with Presence Of Mind in 2000. 4 years later they released Omega, which were re-released with new guitars and drums in 2009, together with the first record. In 2007 Nightwish choosed Anette to be their new singer and Alyson Avenue were without one, however they found another in “hidden gem” Arabella Vitanc.
Mastermind in the group is keyboardist Niclas Olsson, who has written all but two songs on this new record by himself, Mats Edström (of Shiva) has written the titlesong and Fredrik Bergh (of Street Talk) has co-written another together with Niclas. I think the production is very good and the mixing (by Chris Laney) are topnotch, way better than the original versions of the two first records. On the first 4-5 times I listened to it I thought that the first half was way better than the second. It problary still are better but not that much, in fact on of my favourite tracks is I Will Be Waiting and that song is number 8 of 11. The record opens up with Liar, which is a heavy guitardriven song, problary the heaviest song AA has ever recorded. Next up is the duet between Arabella and Michael Bormann, Will I Make Love, a nice ballad with lovely lyrics. The titlesong Changes, the only song not written by Niclas, is the next song followed by the superb Amazing Days, this might be the best AA song ever. Don’t Know If Love Is Alive is another ballad which shows Arabella’s beautiful voice. In all this is a mighty fine AOR-record, as always from the guys (and girls). It’s hard to tell if this is better than the other 2 records, but one thing is certain… it’s heavier, but without losing the edge. I think the “depth” is better with great backing vocals from Mike Andersson (Cloudscape) and Anette Olzon (Nightwish).
One of Sweden’s best AOR-bands are back, buy it!
