Lynyrd Skynyrd es un grupo de hard rock estadounidense considerado «el grupo definitivo de rock sureño, fusionando la potencia saturada del blues-rock con una imagen sureña rebelde y la arrogancia del hard rock».1 El grupo adquirió importancia durante los años 70, bajo el liderazgo del vocalista y compositor principal Ronnie Van Zant, hasta su muerte en 1977.

Lynyrd Skynyrd entró en el Rock and Roll Hall of Fame el 13 de marzo de 2006.2 Fue uno de los grupos de rock sureño de la década de 1970 con mayor éxito comercial y aclamación por parte de la crítica. Su distintivo sonido, con tres guitarras principales, convirtió sus canciones «Free Bird» y «Sweet Home Alabama» en himnos estadounidenses y estampas habituales de la radio FM. Los artistas optaron al premio 25 años después de la publicación de su primer álbum. Los miembros galardonados fueron Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Leon Wilkeson, Bob Burns, Billy Powell, Ed King, Artimus Pyle y Steve Gaines.

La canción «Sweet Home Alabama» era una respuesta a las canciones «Southern Man» y «Alabama» de Neil Young, que criticaba el quehacer sureño. La revista Rolling Stone los colocó en el número 95 de su lista de los mejores artistas de la historia, mientras que VH1 los posicionó 77 en la lista hecha el 2010.
