I started Writing the riffs too this album between the age of 17 and 25,
but it wasn't until 2 years ago until I started to record the ideas
down.
A contradiction in hate is more of a nostalgic affair for me, using riffs that were heavily influenced by the metal I was listening to
as mid teenager, combining again Metal ideas with Prog style sections
and such!
The opening track starts with a Tapping idea that moves into some cool metal chug, I mastered this song with slightly more lower
mids to bring the guitars up a bit, they are set to be a little boomy,
so watch your speakers on this track smile
Losing Control is another stab at myself lyrically for breaking my right hand back in 2002. and
ending my professional career at that time.
track 3 is my favourite from this album, I love the Prog verses that lead into noisy punk - ish
style choruses. I enjoyed the solo work on this song a lot.
track 4 was a little hats off to Metallica in places, A metal ballad thing that
was a lot of fun to do, I especially like the clean guitars on this
song.
track 5 is one big onslaught of heavy, this song has some of my oldest ideas and riffs, this song was originally recorded 5 times
before but could never quite get the sound i wanted, finally this
version happened and it feels complete to me now!
Round & Round is a little lighter musically but still with some cool guitar bits! I
like the choruses on this one, they was fun to sing out!
track 7 is the other ballad of the album, and has a slightly different feel to the
other songs. it has a nice almost Coldplay style piano in it which i
liked very much smile
now track 8 is a performance piece, a character imprisoned by his world into an Oubliette never to be allowed free. this
sick twisted mass murderer simply has no comprehension of why he is
where he is and does not understand why he can't be allowed to roam free
and do what he does. this was the most fun song to sing on the album,
once practiced the vocal was delivered in one take. this is one of the
only songs I have ever vocally done in one take, for I felt I only had
one chance to get it right so i went for it and it turned out quite good
i think! a little dark, a little twisted but still a good heavy tune!
The last song of the album is more of a guitar thing, a little tribute to one of my favourite players Mr Satriani.
combing it with vocal passages and such this track ended up being a good way to finish the album smile
A contradiction in hate lyrically is just that, a complete contradiction
in places, one min breaking away from hate, the next being consumed by
it.
The Underlining theme to this album was written to try and help me overcome losing my siblings, for a very very long time things were
just not right between myself & them and in the end it became
necessary to walk away indefinitely to save my sanity and health.
and for this purpose A Contradiction In Hate helped through this difficult time!
The Art Work for the cover was influenced by my love of the book Dante's
Divine Comedy , I loved the art by Gustove Dore and tried to create
something similar only with some colour and digital distortion smile
I hope you enjoy this album and all the best smile (Mattos Maul)
