| AOR - The Secrets Of L.A. [Japanese Edition] (2013)
The new album entitled "The Secrets Of L.A." by Frédéric Slama's project AOR to be released through German label Aor Heaven next November 29th in Europe, is currently available in Japan (with 2 bonus tracks) via Rubicon Music. As usual, the recording features high caliber stars such as Fergie Frederiksen, Jeff Scott Soto, Bill Champlin, Jim Jidhed, Robin Beck, Goran Edman and lots more.
At this point, one should ask if we have not had enough Slama's AOR discs titled 'L.A.' by now, as "The Secrets Of L.A." is the 12th... but that's not the remarkable spot here. The issue falls in the dangerously tendency to repeat over and over the same thing again. Fortunately, "The Secrets Of L.A." shows a slightly different approach than the previous volumes; it's the harder, more edgy Melodic Hard Rock oriented recording ever from the AOR / Slama factory. The other positive plus on this new offering is the fact Slama is increasingly getting better and better vocalists to sing his tunes on each recording.
We still find the '80s inspired smooth Westcoast / AOR (genre) songs in this "The Secrets Of L.A." like "Deep Whirlpool" (the immense Fergie Frederiksen on lead vox), the velvety "Secrets In The Shadows" featuring Alien's Jim Jidhed or the always brilliant Robin Beck on "The Name Of The Game", all enhancing the quality with great performances. But it's on the rocking, guitar-driven numbers where this new AOR album brings a new, fresh air.
I was quite surprised to see a rocking lung like the phenomenal Axe's Bob Harris hired to perform not one, but two songs here; the sharp, close to hard rock "Out Of The Past" and the dynamic melodic rocker "The Main Attraction". Harris sings his heart out on these tracks in an almost Glenn Hughes-like delivery, providing a more muscular vibe to this AOR recording. But we have more; Jeff Scott Soto rocks-up "Stage Struck" - very well selected to perform this corker - Goran Edman is used in his more agressive side for "Web Of Lies", and even Bill Champlin turns the obviously 'L.A. session' penned "Back To San Francisco" into an uptempo rocker, proving this new AOR CD goes for something more meaty.
The new AOR album "The Secrets Of L.A." offers a varied, different bulk this time: more rocking oriented songs blended with smooth melodic tunes to seduce a wider audience. This Japanese version worth the purchase as includes two good bonuses in the cool "I Owe It To Myself" featuring the lead vocals of Manu Esteve (from the underratred Hardreams), and a melodious performance from Swedes' Houston main singer Hank Erix on "The Price To Pay". Easily Recommended.
