Sucker get the push on Dangerdog Music Reviews because they're native to
Pennsylvania, our home base. Hailing from coal country of Scranton,
Sucker is a power trio fronted by female lead singer Candi Vee, who
writes all they lyrics.
Being from a blue-collar town, you would expect Sucker to deliver some basic hard rock, and that's essentially
what you get on their 13 song debut album. Yet their rock has obvious
notes of punk, metal, and more than a little power pop accessibility in
their presentation. Vee's vocal style is also prominent with a melodic
clear delivery having a natural smooth sultriness to it. Her bass work
is equally interesting. It's not only clear in the mix, but quite
steady, performed with near effortless ease.
Backing up Ms. Vee are guitarist Janson Harris and drummer Timmy Prime, both of whom are solid
musicians. Harris offers good, defined, but also varied, solos across
the album. I wouldn't call his style overtly technical; it seems that
he'd rather keep out the jams (especially live) rather than give you a
lesson in guitar methodology. Some of his best stuff comes Amphetamine Queen, Never Meant To, Can't Say No, Dirty Secrets, and bluesy Telephone,
one of the best songs here. Put the parts together and Sucker is a very
tight rock band, composing solid, sometimes more modern sounding,
melodic hard rock. Alternatively, one may still wonder what makes them
differ from their peers, or what about their music will put them ahead
of the pack. Ponder the questions, if you wish, while you enjoy the
tunes. Perhaps with some additional visibility the band will catch on.
