| PARIS - Only One Life (2013) Friends since their teens, singer & keyboard player Frederic Dechavanne and guitar player Sebastien Montet grew up in the Paris, France suburbs sharing a common interest in classic AOR / Melodic Rock music. They wrote together many songs through the last two years and decided to name their project simply PARIS, which recording debut CD will be released next April 12.
The duo signed a record deal straight from gate getting some top AOR musicians to assist. These include producer Alessandro Del Vecchio (Lionville, Hardline, Issa) and the rhythm section of Anna Portalupi (Mitch Malloy, Lionville, Hardline) on bass and Alessandro Mori (Mitch Malloy, Lionville, Axe) on drums. Also as guests, we found renowned Robert Sall (Work Of Art, W.E.T.) on guitar and Steve Newman (Newman, Big Life) on backing vocals. It's all rather impressive, but what about the results?
"Only One Life" is a solid and entertaining album of AOR flavored Melodic Rock. Strong songwriting gives the songs their fundamental strength and the excellent musicianship brings them to life. A couple of tunes have a little West Coast AOR feel like the radio friendly opener "Dancing on the Edge" or "What Should We Be Saying" filled with lovable keyboards, but the large majority are straight up rockers leaning more to the Melodic Hard Rock side of AOR, strongly influenced by Newman (the band). Best examples in this rockin' vein are "America" (featuring a great Robert Sall solo) with its layered chorus, "South of Love", "The Clock" and "Handle With Care". "Longer Than I Care To Remember" is a huge mid-pacer pumped by a rounded bass line and nice keyboard arrangements surrounding the soft melody. Of course, there're some ballads: the melodic semi-midtempo "Every Time You Walk Away" and closer "Time Still to Come", a chilling slow tune with an engaging melody and a very nice chorus.
Fundamentally, Paris' core force Dechavanne and Montet know their chosen genre by heart, so you can expect traditional rockin' AOR / Melodic (sometimes Hard) Rock sounds on their first CD "Only One Life". The album delivers quite catchy songs and melodies many times recalling Newman and similar British bands, all performed with skilled musicianship and very well produced by Alessandro Del Vecchio. Perhaps Dechavanne’s lead vocals have room for improvement, but his overall performance is solid, satisfactory. One of the surprises of the year, Paris debut "Only One Life" is easily recommended to any fan of the genre.
