| GENE THE WEREWOLF - Rock N' Roll Animal (2012)
GENE THE WEREWOLF was formed in Pittsburgh in 2006 and is comprised of five native musicians commanded by guitarist and vocalist Gene The Werewolf (a/k/a Jon Belan).
The band released two indie albums in the US, and now "Rock N' Roll Animal" is their international debut CD via Frontiers Records.
The straight forward style in rock 'n' roll is never become outdated, so Gene The Werewolf just go for a classic (hard) rock very much in the style of Krokus, AC/DC and alikes with a little ounce of groove from earlier Aerosmith maybe.
Jon on vocals is a genuine front man and has a strong, clear rock voice and together with the sharp riffs from Drew on the guitar and a solid rhythm section they deliver catchy, simple choruses, easy to learn to enjoy with a pack of cold beers.
All are uptempo classic-hard songs with an updated sound (specially the guitar set up). Only in "Heart of Steel" the go for more melodic hard rock meanings ala Night Ranger even adding a strong synth line, and "The Ballad of Gene" is a nice melodious slow tune.
"Rock N' Roll Animal" is a fun album very well played, recorded and produced.
Very easy, basic lyrics and a hoarse voice from the vocalist is typical for the genre. It is a 90% ballad free album, it's a party record and it swings really well. Nothing innovative at all, only joy, fervor and dedication over 12 catchy songs.
Seems Frontiers Records are expanding their rooster with bands delivering different types of rock, a step aside from their usual MR/AOR offering.
And that's not a bad thing.
