| KID ROCK - Rebel Soul (2012) Detroit's wild metal-rapper KID ROCK shot to superstardom with his fourth full-length album, 1998's 'Devil Without a Cause', but since then the man has become musically more and more Classic Rock oriented. In 2003 Kid's first single was a Bad Company re-make, the cover art to his 2006 live album paid tribute to Bob Seger's 'Live Bullet', and then he even recorded with Seger in 2010. His new album "Rebel Soul" to be released November 19, is even more Classic American Rock than ever.
Metal-rap is gone since a long time from Kid Rock's headquarters, and the truth is that the Kid is not a 'rebel' anymore. His music is deeply inspired in American traditional sounds, and that's not necessary means bland. Indeed there's some strong and rocking electric guitars on some tracks here, as on "Mr. Rock N Roll", "Celebrate" and "God Save Rock N Roll", the latter infused with nice honky-tonk pianos as well. We have good Southern flavored tunes in "Let's Ride", "Detroit, Michigan" (a Ronnie Love cover) and title track "Rebel Soul", while some tracks are really classic retro rock blues numbers such as "Catt Boogie" and "Redneck Paradise", all good and utilising vintage instruments like old organs. A couple recalls Kid Rock's earlier albums as the syncopated "Cucci Galore", or the slow "The Mirror" with more modern background. The best song for me anyway, it's the final "Midnight Ferry", a truly good, organic bluesy classic rock tune with great clean guitars and dynamic drum beats.
Kid Rock, if someone have not already noticed yet, is a Classic Rock artist now. I didn't liked his two previous albums for the most part, but "Rebel Soul" is a very good, classic rock sounding album. Sonwriting, intrumentation and general performance are totally traditional rock, with an organic and warm production. Kid Rock is not a rebel anymore, just a solid Rock music performer, and in my opinion, "Rebel Soul" is his best album to date.
