| F.E.A.S.T. - Strong Wild And Free (2012) Two years have passed by since the debut album of Italian melodic hard rockers F.E.A.S.T., brainchild of talented guitarist, singer and composer Fabri Kiareli. An admittedly stunning debut which revived the '80s in the best way. They're back with the sophomore effort "Strong Wild And Free", and indeed the band sounds stronger than ever.
Kiareli is an artist who is heavily influenced by late eighties / early nineties US bands like XYZ, Giant, Cinderella, the 'American' Whitesnake and some Rainbow among others. In the new album, F.E.A.S.T. give us their mark from the first song, the title track "Strong, Wild and Free". It's a great rocker with a strong dose of Whitesnake and the guitar solo here is simply huge. "Heart And Soul" is moving to the same old-fashioned paths but more melodic hard rock oriented, whilst "Hard Rocking Man" has a monster opening riff, dirtier sound and a bluesy swagger all over. Stunning tune, one of the highlights of the album.
"Gonna Fly" has that L.A. feel-good vibe, fine arrangements with shades of the more commercial Great White and a catchy chorus. "Tell Me You're Ready" is a track cut from the same cloth as a classic MSG or UFO, while the melodious rocker "It's Not The Same" has a terrific chorus line to die for, enhanced by very good harmony vocals. Other enjoyable moments here are "How Long", the acoustic semi-ballad "A Million Years" and the uptempo cover of "Dancing To The Rhythm" - originally written by Stevie Wonder - adorned with precise synths. Closer "Children Of Beslan" is some kind of an epic track, a long 8-minute composition which starts slowly with some piano before the guitars take the main role. It's a classic hard rock number paying homage to the greats.
After a very good debut there was high expectations over this second delivery by F.E.A.S.T. And the Italians do not disappoint with "Strong, Wild And Free". It has everything that an '80 & '90s Melodic Hard Rock freak could ask for; great and meaty riffs & solos, soaring melodies, passionate vocal performances, a tight musicianship but most of all heart and soul. It should be remarked the fabulous glossy production, something really necessary for this genre and hard to achieve nowadays.
